BMW Brings New Meaning To The Mobile App Store

From next spring, US BMW owners will be able to purchase new apps and services for their cars straight from the dashboard.

At the moment, if you've got a brand new BMW complete with ConnectedDrive, the company's integrated infotainment and communications platform, adding new features means a trip to the dealership or calling a dedicated helpline.

However, the new service, which will be getting its first public demonstration at the 2015 International CES in Las Vegas this January, will let owners purchase new services and ConnectedDrive features while behind the wheel and to renew subscriptions to or extend the use of existing paid-for services.

The initial apps and services that will be available to buy include Concierge, Navigation Map Updates and on-demand Internet Service.

Concierge not only offers help in finding cinemas, restaurants and hotels but also puts drivers in contact with a live representative for navigation and journey troubleshooting and who can call someone on the driver's behalf if he or she doesn't have access to a smartphone or it is unsafe to use a handset. — AFP/RelaxNews 2014
